Number Three of the list:
2011 was a big year at Lodge, with the launch of two new cookware lines. Inviting a whole new audience to fall in love with Cast Iron, Lodge Elements combines premium Stainless Steel cookware with our traditional Cast Iron Skillet in one set. The Lodge Seasoned Steel line features Carbon Steel skillets that are American-made and seasoned at the Lodge foundry. We hope to advance the culinary lives of chefs and campers alike with these brutally tough pans.

With consumer demand now exceeding foundry capacity, Lodge has unveiled plans for a considerable expansion of their South Pittsburg plant. These will include new melting systems, sand systems, an additional molding line, and expanded seasoning lines. We are excited to be able to grow to new heights with our feet still firmly planted at home. Don't tell my wife, but she is getting the matching Blue Porcelain Skillet and Dutch Oven. Maybe she'll stop using our standard Lodge cast iron cookware off the chuckwagon as she does love the fine porcelain finish that will go wonderfully with her kitchen decor.

Number Two on the List:
A new FORD King Ranch Edition or Ford Mustang.

While other manufactures are barely back on their 4x4 feet and Nissan along with Toyota still decoding their big-pickup game plan, Ford is rolling out the most new F-150 has ever seen in its history: 4 engines, one transmission, significant chassis upgrades, and an instrument cluster that bares this truck's soul. To show serious intent, the F-150s even have new ignition keys that combine lock and remote-control functions in one convenient unit. Additionally, the smart part of Ford's comprehensive F-150 powertrain upgrade is that the Mustang shares two out of the four engines and a version of the new 6-speed automatic transmission and a very fuel efficient V6 engine also available.

Number ONE Item on the List:

WESTERN HORSEMAN Magazine

What better gift for the Cowboy or Cowgirl you desire to give a special gift which will last all year long. Western Horseman since 1936 has been the leader in its category through the years partly because the people who have worked for the magazine also have been involved in the horse industry, with interests ranging from horse shows and rodeo, ranching, trail riding, polo and cutting. "The Sorrow" Western films return to the big screen: retitled "A Sierra Nevada Gunfight"

Story by Roger Edison

Gold miner Roger Hazard played by actor Kirk Harris, heads to the treacherous gold fields of 1870's California with his twelve year old son Casper, played by Ryan Ballance, in tow. The two of them work a small gold mine in the southern fields in hopes of rich dreams. Soon, Roger begins to lose touch with reality.  Casper on his own,  faces the many dangers around every corner. As he seeks every inch of his own strength to save his father from himself, the adolescent manages to fight off savage Indians and ruthless bushwhackers that plague them across California's breathtaking Sierra Nevada's.

In the mold of the 1980 film, "The Shining" directed by Stanley Kubrick starring Jack Nicholson and the 1948 film, "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" written and directed by John Huston, starring Humphrey Bogart and Walter Huston, earned an Academy Award for Directing and Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay along with John Huston's father Walter receiving an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in this film,  'The Sorrow' returns high impact action thrillers of a western gene film to the big screen.

Co-Owner of Rogue Arts LLC, Vernon Mortensen debuts as the director of this western film. Mortensen, who also co-wrote the script with Johnny Harrington is well season in action adventure. He served as a Navy Commando,SWCC Special Warfare Combat Craft) with Special Boat Unit-12. Among several special assignments working with U.S.Navy SEAL Teams, Mortensen met, SEAL Team member Neil Trusso, who is co-producer of "The Sorrow" while they were deployed together in the African war torn country, Somalia during 1993 (the same time as Ridley Scott's movie, Blackhawk Down)  depicts.

The two Naval Special Warfare members friendship shared interest of film making that followed them after their Naval careers. Mortensen, went on to earn a Master Degree from the University of Southern California where he received an Academy of motion picture Arts and Sciences Writer's Fellowship. He also has earned an MBA from Alliant International University, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Directing from renowned Art Center College of Design along with a Bachelor of Science in Electromechanical Technologies from Excelsior College.

Shortly after graduating from USC, Mortensen was recalled, back to active duty with the United States Naval Reserves joining the Special Boat Teams one last time.  After completing his term of service, Mortensen permanently retired from the US Navy in 2008 returning to the film industry full time.

Trusso accomplished everything he set out to do as a Navy SEAL.  Upon completing his enlistment in 1995, he set forth the undertaking of new challenges playing college football at Chapman University, in Orange County, California.  He also became a member and played for the Chapman's WCLL Championship Lacrosse Team.  He earned his Bachelor Degree of Fine Arts in Film Production from Chapman's prestigious Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, which is one of the leading film schools in the country, before entering the film industry.

Trusso was a show runner on the comedy series, “The Crusader” starring Colin Cunningham (TNT’s Falling Skies) and was a Producer for the ground breaking zombie series "Universal Dead" starring DB Sweeney. He also served as an Executive Producer on the gritty boxing drama "The Kid: Chamaco" starring Martin Sheen, Michael Madsen and Kirk Harris which Mortensen also worked on as a producer before production of this new  western-thriller "The Sorrow," starring Kirk  Harris, John Savage and Michael Madsen, that will be premiering in 2013.

Kirk Harris playing the role of Roger Hazard, is a proven actor and self starter.  Although his movie talents further prevail as a writer, producer and director in the film industry. He founded Rogue Arts LLC in 2004 and is CEO of the film distribution and production company. To date, the company has produced 8 feature films and handled the distribution of nearly 50 domestic and foreign films.

Rogue Arts titles have been in the Sundance, Toronto, Berlin, and Cannes Film Festivals which titles include: "Three Days of Rain" starring Peter Falk, Blythe Danner, Lyle Lovett and Jason Patric, the Danish hit "Flickering Lights" starring Ulrich Thomsen and Mads Mikkelsen, and "Con Man" with John Malkovich, Johnny Depp, Chris Penn, Dennis Hopper, and Benicio del Tore.

One of only three independent production companies to successfully co-produce a feature film in Mexico using the Mexican Film Fund, Rogue Arts resulting movie was "The Kid: Chamaco" shot in Mexico City for Mexican director-producer Miguel Necoechea.  The film was written by Harris, Necoechea and Canadian filmmaker Carl Bessai. Harris co-stars along side Martin Sheen playing the roll as a boxer on screen but was former Golden Glove amateur boxer with 51 sanction bouts before entering the film industry.

Co-writer Johnny Harrington, met Vernon Mortensen 13 years ago while working on a student film. The two connected right away and Johnny collaborated with the former Navy Commando on two action-thriller screenplays; "The Long Way Down" and "The Sorrow."

Johnny, born in Canada recently became a US citizen. After playing on a soccer scholarship for the University of Louisville Cardinals, Johnny began screenwriting while working as a substitute teacher in the LA Unified School District. His very first screenplay, "Ten Years In October," written in 1999, was well received in Hollywood, yet for ten years was optioned every 18 months never seeming to find the traction it needed to get produced. Finally, the script attracted Nick Stahl, Amy Smart and Rose McGowan, and soon after, the financing followed. The film was produced, titled "Dead Awake" and was distributed theatrically by First Look across the USA.

Cast of "The Sorrow" include Michael Madsen as Sheriff Sawyer, is best known for his wise guy role in "Reservoir Dogs." John Savage who portrays Father Bill made a major splash with The Deer Hunter (1978), winner of the 1979 Best Picture Oscar. Other cast include, Latin American beauty, Yvonne DeLaRosa as Maria Hazzard, Ruben Chato Hinojosa who is a Texas raised member of the Lipan Apache Nation and proud heritage of the Mescalero Apache tribe, plays Yellow Bear. Additional cast include Matt Bradford, Kelly Parks, Larry Freeland, Curt Copher and Steven Meyers.

Rogue Arts has put together indefensible talent making smart and profitable movies. The superb cinematography to the well fitted filmed score is expected to be a box office hit as "The Sorrow" returns western movies to the big screen in 2013.

In the mist of legal issues with the movie, the production company had to change the title from "The Sorrow" to "A Sierra Nevada Gunfight."   As the movie went for screening, the completed film was sold in February 2013 and comes out on DVD and VOD May of 2013 by Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment.and released under the new title "A Sierra Nevada Gunfight."

Now while I am excited someone I know produce this film, plus I just love Western movies, I personally felt this movie fail short.  The acting was good, but the story line just did not cut it.  Some of the western attire seemed more like slapping it together rather than having a historical expert on sight to say this is good and this won't cut it, because it's a western and not steam punk.  On a scale of 1 to 10, Ten being Superb, this earns merely 2 stars. That's only because I am being kind. Watch it on NETFLICS and save your money at the box Office.

Little Cooks at the Cowboy Gathering

Photo courtesy Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering
Cowboys and Chuckwagons rolled into the Forth Worth Stockyards for the Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering and Western Swing Festival. This marks the 22nd Anniversary Celebration held in the national historic district.
Voted "Best Gathering and Best Family Event" by American Cowboy Magazine, the gathering featured a trail ride from Fort Richardson as cowboys and chuckwagons parade to the stock yards of Fort Worth under direction of wagon boss Mike Stein.  Once at the stock yards, the chuckwagons set up camp as other events kick off like the exciting ranch rodeo.  Additional events included Horsemanship clinics, Trapping show, Cowboy poetry,  Cowboy Music, Ranch Cutting Horse Association Rodeo Finals with Jardine's Chuckwagon Camp and Competition.
What makes this celebration of the West so family oriented is they also hold competitions for the youth who will be our future generation of cowboys and cowgirls. Competition included Youth Poetry contest, Youth Fiddle contest and Youth Chuckwagon Cook-off.
Among the many adult champion chuckwagon cooks, the youth came out and perform remarkably well.  Renown chuckwagon cook  Shirley Richardson, from Bryson, Texas was chairperson for the youth chuckwagon competition.  "In youth competition, the kids cook meatloaf for meat, and a dessert from an assign fruit," states Shirley.
Shirley has been chuckwagon cooking for decades and like most camp cooks, shares a knowledge which has influence the generations to come.  Lynzy Alaniz, is Shirley's great grand daughter who quickly took a liking towards baking.   Lynzy's mother, Becky Alaniz stated "She has competed in the youth group competition at the Red Steagall event for the last three years.  She is a hands own learner. The very first time she was told she would be able to cook like her great grandma, Lynzy became very excited.  We are so fortunate having this opportunity for her to compete in with the youth chuck wagon cook-off."
Lynzy often bakes cookies with her grandmother Christa, called 'Nanna,' by her grand children which is Shirley's daughter after school before being picked up by her mom after work.  All of Shirley's grandchildren and great grandchildren have learn to cook at very young age and each enjoy great grandma's Chuckwagon.

"Lynzy had a little chuck-box that she kept all her cookware in and while some children pretend cooking, Lynzy is learning the art of true cowboy cooking using her favorite cookware, cast iron skillets and dutch oven's.  This year, she had outgrown her original chuck-box and Poppa, Lynzy's grandpa stepped in and built her a new one, which Lynzy used during the Red Steagall event," states Shirley.
Continuing, Shirley indicate, "The small chuck box has wheels on it so it can easily be moved. When in position, Lynzy merely attaches the legs and secures the box in place. It's not hard to buy gifts for her either as I just add to her cooking collection."
Lynzy Alaniz competes at the Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering
This year at age 10, Lynzy made the traditional meatloaf as an entry and the dessert was a Peach Kolache which received third place in the competition.  Her first year, at age 8, she won 4th place with her meatloaf and entered Peach bread Pudding for her dessert. At age 9, Lynzy won second place with her meatloaf and tied with her entry of Peach Pudding.  Youth competitions are a great deal of fun. It not only helps build good character in today's children who participate in these events, but inspires the youth who will be the keepers of the spirit of the west alive. Win or lose, Lynzy has her own stories to tell about her events, recipes and cooking techniques. It's easy for any  parent or grandparent to be ready to brag about such spirited children.
This year, the youth competition had 22 kids performing their culinary skills. First place in the meat category was awarded to 14 year old J.T. Laramore, 2nd place award to 9 year old Aden Choate and 3rd place awarded to 10 year old Marci Wisdom.  The dessert first place award went to 13 year old Finis Smith, 2nd place received by 8 year old Jaci Lawson and Lynzy Alaniz at 10 years old, receiving the third place award.
Jaci Lawson is third generation of chuckwagon cooking being Shirley Richardson's grand daughter while Lynyz Alaniz, is forth generation as Shirley's great grand daughter. A heritage of ranch cooking from the chuckwagon preserved and handed down through the family.
Jaci Lawson awarded second place with her Peach up side down Cake
However, cooking great staples of wholesome food is not just for the young kids to enjoy.  Restored operating wagons dating as early as the 1880's also got deeply into the competition.  Each wagon is judge on wagon appearance, set up and each chuckwagon is like a mobile museum gateway into history.  You can almost imagine being on a trail drive that operate in the late 1860's during the cattle drive boom when you view the cooks handling giant size dutch ovens as they compete for the bragging rights of who makes the best cobble
Judging in the meat category, Hester 2H wagon won first place,  Henry Jennings taking second followed by the Rafter JB Wagon in third place.
Beans: 1st Place Tie – Rafter JB Wagon and Moreland Chuck Wagon; 3rd Place - Out Yonder
Bread: 1st C Bar C Wagon, 2nd Breakaway Wagon, 3rd Hester 2H Wagon
Dessert: 1st Rafter JB Wagon, 2nd Flint Creek, 3rd Sulphur Draw
Best Overall:  1st Hester 2H Wagon,  2nd Henry Jennings
The chuck wagon is the state vehicle. Photo: AP Photo/Fort Worth Star-Telegra

Congratulations to all the youth, Young or older who competed as they keep the spirit of the cowboy and western heritage alive. Click here for more information on the Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering   and schedule events going on at the Fort Worth Stockyards

Dashing through the Snow

Oil Painting "Winter Longhorns" by artist Randy Follis

"Dashing through the Snow"

In the two horse covered chuckwagon
We're dashing through the snow
these steers all seem to be lagging
while up the cattle trail we go
Spurs and dinner Bell ring
Making spirits bright
Pistol holster and rifle sling
I'll be watching cattle tonight

Oh, jingle bobs and dinner bell
sourdough cooked all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
with all this dust and hay-aye'
Jingle bobs, Dinner bell
Beans and biscuits on the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
and a bedroll where my head can lay

A month or two ago
I started this cattle drive
Now dreaming of Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side
The horses were lean and lank
Misfortune seemed our lot
We got into a drifted bank
And I woke up on the spot.

Oh, jingle bobs and dinner bell
sourdough cooked all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
with all this dust and hay-aye'
Jingle bobs, Dinner bell
Beans and biscuits on the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
and a bedroll where my head can lay

Jingle bobs and dinner bell
Jingle these spurs all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
On the chuckwagon all the way
